here we have: Dev Patel* is an FBI agent and the only escapee / survivor of a notorious torturer, The Keep, who steals children and keeps them for decades inside meticulously designed chambers of horror hidden throughout the United States. A reclusive tech bro literally stumbles upon the entrance to one of these horror chambers, and The Keep steals his kid in retaliation. Dev needs vengeance, tech bro wants his kid back, and The Keep seems to delight in making everyone suffer as much as humanely possible along the way.
*okay it's not literally Dev Patel but like, c'mon. Look at him.
The page spreads are structured beautifully: at turns claustrophobic, with panels blocking in faces and facial features in fearful fractal patterns, and then suddenly expansive double page spreads of wide natural settings and open skies. The ideas of entrapment and freedom gyrate through the designs of the comic in such a natural way that gives an atmospheric element to the reading experience.
As for the story, it is a quick crime horror read with fantastic character art and an extremely dark ending. IDW bought Scott Snyder's Dark Spaces for a reason. He's good at making comics. Also, hate to say it, but some kids are just so dumb you don't feel all that bad when they get kidnapped. Listen to your mother, geez.
