in a nutshell: Mars, an enby teen, wakes up to their twin sister trying to murder them in the middle of the night. Sis dies instead, and leaves behind a load of questions, mainly, why did she escape her summer camp to come murder her twin? Mars decides to attend the elite summer camp in her place, and despite being put in the boys cabin, ingratiates themself with the friend group of teen girls their sister belonged to: The Honeys, a mysterious clan of queen bees who wield great social power and hold many dark secrets.
the vibes: a Disney Channel original movie that aired once but, due to certain parts being too damned scary, was never aired again. Ok, it's a bit too class-conscious and way too gay to have ever been produced for Disney, but, you get what I mean. Let's say it was late night Nickelodeon, that might work.
main themes: hmm idk, imagine Butler's Gender Troubles' younger, dumber cousin goes to a fancy summer camp to disrupt the co-ed traditions, think about climate change, and mildly bitch about social class stratum
the writing: Not bad, started off so strong that I was disappointed when it went all summer-camp-in-the-sun rather than Friday the 13th. You know I love teen girls doing violence, but there just wasn't enough blood. Plenty of honey though. A quick beach read, definitely for a younger crowd. (I did not know this was YA when it was recommended to me but it quickly became apparent.)
